The term "Industrial Revolution" describes a time of profound economic and social transformation that occurred in North America and Europe between the late 18th and mid-19th centuries. It was defined by the change from rural economies dependent on manual labor to industrialized economies based on machines.

The Industrial Revolution changed the way people lived and worked, and is seen as a turning point in human history.

A multitude of inventions, including the steam engine, spinning jenny, power loom, and cotton gin, among others, led to the Industrial Revolution. The development of the factory system and higher economic growth were both facilitated by these new technologies, which improved production efficiency and made it possible to produce items in large quantities at reduced prices.

With the advent of the working class, urbanization, and capitalism, the Industrial Revolution resulted in tremendous social and economic transformations. Labor unions were established to defend the rights of the workers who were exploited by the factory system. The combustion of coal and other fossil fuels caused air pollution and led to the depletion of natural resources, two environmental effects of the Industrial Revolution that were substantial.
